Festival of the Not was the consolidation and public presentation of the two-year collaboration Giles Bailey and CIRCA Projects. This hybrid artistic/curatorial event aimed to share our work investigating, and prompt discussion around, the research question:How can a sustained collaboration between a curatorial practice and an artist working with performance propose new creative relationships with and understandings of the cultural landscapes of England’s North East? The event took as its creative stimulus the following quote from Robert Filliou’s book Teaching and Learning as Performing Arts:“In order to make artists, first, realize they are part of a network and, therefore, may as well refrain from their tiresome spirit of competition, we intend, when we do perform, to advertise other artists’ performances together with our own. But this is not enough. The artist must realize also that this part of the wider network, ‘la Fête Permanente’ going on around [them] all the time in all parts of the world.”It featured performances, screenings, talks and workshops by:Agnes Varda, Anne-James Chaton, Cath & Phil Tyler, Chooc Ly Tan, Competition, Deborah Bower & Janina Sabaliauskaite, Derek Jarman, Ed Luker, Film Bee, FLUXUS Open Programme Meeting, Giles Bailey, Sophie Soobramanien, Jamie Hammill & Nellie Saunby, G.O.D.S (Glasgow Open Dance School), The Ignorant Curator, John W. Fail, Katy Bentham, Kim Coleman, Lauren Vevers, Louwrien Wijers, Mia la Metta, Morgan Quaintance, Pentecostal Party, Peter Greenaway, Rafaela Lopez, Baptiste Masson, David Perreard, Benjamin Blaquart, Laurie Charles, Monster Chetwynd, Louise Hervé & Chloé Maillet, Benjamin Magot, Arnaud Maguet, Rene McBrearty, Robert Filliou, Shirley Mann & Leroy McSex, Shy Bairns, Splash Addict, Tina KeaneThe research uses this framing to consider the disparate creative strands that define a particular locality. The performances, screenings and pedagogic experiments that are presented in the events are designed to initiate links, discussion and networks between artists and audiences in the North East and beyond, while proposing means to consider approaches to co-authorship and collaboration.
