This paper reports on a study conducted with one hundred and fifteen teachers from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) schools in Malta. The study investigated the ways in which learner independence or autonomy is promoted and how teaching strategies are determined by the strengths and limitations of the learning context and the needs and objectives of the learners. Implications for the professional development of language teachers are discussed.
