This essay looks into the reasons why literary culture and the humanities have been slow and underprepared in responding to the global environmental crisis. It argues that the literary imaginary of modernity is deeply embedded in the epistemes that constitute some of the most powerful agents in driving planetary ecological precarity. This often creates performative contradictions when these inherited and perpetuated imaginaries are at odds with professed ideologies. Thus, while much of contemporary literary culture may even ideologically endorse environmental attitudes, it stays attached to epistemes that propel environmental degradation forward.
