Interview with Juan Carlos Marin, Research Institute Gino Germani, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina. This Interview corresponds to the research project "Socio-ecological inequality and injustice as obstacles to the democratization process in Latin America and the Caribbean. A theoretical and empirical study (DESDEMO) (http://www.desdemo.org). The interview took place in Buenos Aires on 9 December 2011. Juan Carlos Marin passed away on 2 May 2014.The interview addresses some of the key questions of the DESDEMO Project, such as:What is the understanding of leading cultural, economic, political, and social actors regarding the feasibility of simultaneously abating social and environmental injustice and inequality? What is their "threshold" of tolerance to environmental injustice and inequality when their reduction seems to bear a high cost for society and present a "threat" to advances in economic development? In what sort of situations do they consider legitimate to tolerate these inequalities and injustices as a trade-off for the achievement of socio-economic or political gains? What kind of arguments do they deploy to explain and justify their positions? How do these actors conceptualize the emergence of ecological distribution conflicts arising in the region? What are the main obstacles and opportunities facing progressive actors to incorporate the struggle against environmental injustice and inequality as an intrinsic component of substantive democratic politics? What are the main implications for the social sciences and for the production of knowledge on these issues more generally?
