Abstract

Drawing upon previous studies on the use of video observation as a pedagogical approach in training professionals, this small-scale study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the use of mobile video technology to enhance reflective learning of public service interpreting at a UK university. The new technology is a digital tagging tool allowing users to mark key moments of video performance for discussion and review. Over five months, three MA Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting students used the video observation software to review and tag trainee interpreters’ interpreting performance in classes of public service interpreting and formative assessment. They provided peer feedback and engaged in self-reflective learning during the course of tagging. Data collected from the reflective journals and interviews demonstrate that participants benefited from the tagging experience, with an enhanced understanding of assessment criteria and interactional skills in public service interpreting, and increased confidence in their interpreting performance. This small-scale study shows that this video technology combining review and annotation functions may be a useful tool for interpreter trainers to evaluate the overall performance of trainees and generate a selection of examples for reference to improve trainee interpreters’ understanding of essential skills in public service interpreting and how these skills are assessed. It is also helpful for trainee interpreters to effectively engage in self-critique and peer feedback to identify strengths and areas for improvement, in particular regarding non-verbal performance
