Abstract

An excavation monograph detailing the investigation report of an important multi-period site on the shores of the Medway Estuary in Kent. The main focus of activity was the Roman period, with important late Roman and early medieval phases of activity that are unusual for North Kent. Finds include Roman gold jewellery, hundreds of coins, thousands of pottery sherds; two Anglo-Saxon spears heads, a Nydam style Anglo-Saxon brooch and evidence for late Roman silver refining and blacksmithing. A mausoleum containing a lead coffin was partially robbed in the early medieval period and then became the roost for a tawny owl. other structures include a road and traces of timber buildings, including part of a large Late Roman aisled hall.
