Abstract

© 2018 selection and editorial matter, Stephan Pfaffenzeller; individual chapters, the contributors. An important area of empirical research in development economics has been the integration of agricultural commodity markets in developing countries. This has been particularly important in the backdrop of implementing structural adjustment and market reform programs, as many developing countries have embarked on liberalising their agricultural markets. Arguments have been made that the liberalisation of agricultural commodity markets can lead to allocative efficiency and long-term growth in agriculture. These liberalisation programs are also important to market integration, as they rely on price signals being correctly transmitted across regions so that both producers and consumers benefit from trade.
