This catalogue essay provides the first detailed critical analysis of the British avant-garde reception of the photographs of Karl Blossfeldt and Francis Bruguière. It examines the range of responses, both critical and artistic, Blossfeldt and Bruguière's innovative photographs elicited from British writers, historians and sculptors following the exhibition of their work, for the first time, at the Dorothy Warren Gallery in London, 1929. The influence of Blossfeldt's close-up images of botanical forms is placed in the contemporary context of biomorphism while Bruguière's dynamic superimpositions are explored in relation to British interest in the kinaesthetic nature of making and viewing modern sculpture. The three-volume catalogue will accompany a major exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Centre, Cincinatti for the FotoFocus Biennial 2018 to celebrate the upcoming centenary of the Karl Blossfeldt and Francis Bruguière exhibition at the Dorothy Warren Gallery in London, 1929.
