© 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. This article considers the relationship between income inequality and health. Recent research has suggested that absolute income does not explain the existence of health inequalities in developed countries and that income inequality is a more important determinant of health. This article discusses the theories and evidence linking income inequality to health, and explains the difficulties and challenges any future research needs to address.
