Abstract

Electrical vehicles have been rapidly developing in recent years because of their advantages in energy conservation and emission reduction. The thermal conditions directly affect the longevity, security, and range ability of the battery. Several studies have been carried on thermal management of electrical vehicle, but most of them have focused on efficient cooling methods to avoid the unsafety induced by thermal runaway. However, heating approach at freezing condition was as same important as cooling but barely noticed by researchers. When the ambient temperature is lower than 5 °C, the electrolyte viscosity increase, the generation of current is inhibited because the movement of charge carriers is blocked. In winter of northern China, all the electrical vehicles have been reported to be extremely exhausted during vehicle start time and the range ability is obviously lower than in standard conditions. In order to make sure the batteries are properly in-charged, the heating strategy including the heating power and heating points should be well-designed to satisfy the requirements that the temperatures is uniformly elevated in particular time before in-charge. In this study, the heating strategies have been studied and the anticipating results have been validated. The uniform heating strategy was found to induce non-uniform temperature distribution in heating progress. An optimized strategy has been identified, which can control the maximum temperature difference lower than 5 °C.
