Abstract

In the context of increasing dissatisfaction with “Eurocentric” models of racialization, this paper draws on the idea of plural modernities to offer an alternative. It argues that diverse modernities and racializations are “coevolving” and interwoven and that these processes have been profoundly shaped by, but cannot be reduced to merely a set of local reflections of, Western influence. After introducing and contextualizing these themes, the paper sets out the main opportunities offered by, as well as the limitations of, a research focus on co-evolving racialized modernities.
