The way that individual trains are driven has a significant influence on the wider railway network, and the most significant variation in driving style is typically observed while trains are braking. The purpose of this paper is therefore to measure the decelerations achieved in service by metro, regional, intercity and freight trains to benchmark driving styles in mixed-traffic railways. The speed profile data used for such investigations are not always readily available, and three different methodologies for data collection are outlined within the paper: gathering directly from on-board odometry, use of GPS data and video analysis. The benchmarks derived can be used to improve predictions of train behaviour for multi-train simulation models, which would in turn benefit wider studies of timetabling, traffic management and optimisation of energy consumption.
