By examining Thoreau's living arrangements in Walden Woods, and comparing them with the Farnsworth House, which Mies van der Rowe designed as a rural retreat, and drawing on Thorstein Veblen's economic theory, this essay argues that we spend far more money to assuage our social discomforts than we do on meeting our physical needs.
