Abstract

Since the installation of the very first spar platform, spars have become increasingly popular due to its high stability. Spar platforms have been improved over the years, from the first conventional classic spars to an improved variant, the truss spars and then the recently developed cell spar. Each generation of the spar is designed to improve the functionality of the previous one with a reduction in cost. For spar platforms to operate efficiently in deep water, it is important for the platform to have superior station keeping abilities. This paper compares and analyses the motion response of the three different types of spar platforms in an actual field environment as well as the effects of mooring lines. Spar platforms tested will be subjected to actual environment conditions in the Gulf of Mexico. Hydrodynamic coefficients and RAOs (Response Amplitude Operators) will first be obtained using hydrostatic and hydrodynamics analysis software MOSES. Coupled dynamic analysis will then be carried out for the spar platforms and their mooring configuration using dynamic analysis software Orcaflex. Discussions will compare and evaluate mooring analysis results of three different types of spar platforms (Classic, Truss, and Cell).
