Waiting for Los Angeles was a single-channel video installation developed over a two-year period in Los Angeles with the financial support of the Arts Council as well as the backing of City Council member Tom Labonge, hosted by the California Institute of the Arts and exhibited in Ex-libris Gallery (April 2015). It looked at how the notion of community is being redefined through the decentralised urban environments of our post-modern geographies. It does so by through the example of Los Angeles and more specifically Griffith’s Park on of the few truly democratic and public spaces in Los Angeles that and attracts people from all walks of life. If you wait here in one spot you don’t need to move through L.A. to see it, instead, the city, its diversity and complexities move past you in the form of hikers, their disparate conversations and activities. The project explores new territory within my practice such as narrative, scriptwriting, directing and working with actors. It non-liner narratives mirror the structure of the city they seek to represent as well as exploring the boundary between the documentary and the real. At the same time this research will firm up my recent move from photography into time-based media. The research was disseminated in the shape of a video installation at the Ex-Libris Gallery in April 2015.
