This paper examines research engagement with practitioners in accounting education research. It discusses the potential benefits and difficulties of greater engagement between researchers and practitioners in a specific aspect of accounting education research, preparing students for careers in accounting. The paper notes that while there is a consensus that the development of generic skills is important for new entrants into the accountancy profession, there are also inconsistencies in the literature as to which attributes are most significant and why. There is also evidence of a gap between skills development in universities, the experiences of new graduates and the expectations of employers.Drawing from a data set accumulated by working together with a group of accounting employers, this paper examines how these apparent inconsistencies might be resolved by working together with practitioners. The paper considers the feasibility of such an approach as well as potential benefits for researchers and employers.
