Locomotion was an installation commissioned by the Great North Museum: Hancock to contribute to Spineless, the first major natural history exhibition at the museum since it reopened in 2009. Spineless showcased hundreds of invertebrate specimens from the museum’s extensive natural history collections alongside several live specimens. The exhibition also included several important specimen loans from the Natural History Museum in London.Locomotion presents two videos taken at Berlin Zoo aquarium in 2015 and presented as small projections into two large glass chemistry flasks. They are shot in real time and have not been sped up or slowed down. They compare the very different rates of movement between two types of jellyfish; one slow and graceful and the other fast and frenzied.
