Abstract

This installation of work was indicative of a new direction within Cuddon's practice. What began as an attempt to reconcile the drawings/collages and ceramics sculptures, which in themselves cross the boundaries between two and three-dimensionality, Cuddon shifted away from the sculptural presence of the ceramic forms to the resonant undersides of the sculptures, broken fragments and details of simple modelled shapes. Creating multiple photocopies of these arranged elements provided a new lexicon of forms with which to construct and deconstruct meaning with an installation at FASS Gallery. The act of taking remnants or vestigial forms from one process and reusing them within another was extended through the creation of ‘bunting’ made from off-cuts from the photocopying-collaging process. This bunting was suspended at shin height across the gallery creating, once again, a three-dimensional presence within the space Set Abreast continued Cuddon's interest in linguistic structures, forms and broken meanings. Whereas the sculptures demonstrate an attempt to capture and contain a particular sensation through the mark-making and surface tension that is embedded within the use of clay, the reproduced nature of these printed images create an imprint; a proposition for an alternative action.
