The performance of lithium oxygen batteries using a range of electrocatalysts is described. Alternative supports to carbons are considered including nickel foam, silver and titanium carbide. Titanium carbide gave exceptional discharge capacity of above 5000 mAh g (-1)(catalyst) which was twice that achieved with the best performing manganese dioxide catalyst. A Li metal air battery has produced cycling performance of 200 cycles with only a 50% reduction in capacity, in which it was operated for 3 months continuously. A macro-homogeneous model has been developed to evaluate the operating performance of a rechargeable non-aqueous Li-air battery.
