Winifred Knights, a little known British artist, was the first woman to hold a Rome Scholarship. Well regarded during her lifetime, her early death and diminutive body of work, have lead to her legacy being little considered. Nadia Hebson reconsiders the breadth of Knights’ oeuvre and explores the significance of Knights’ clothing, correspondence and interior design in relation to her paintings. The PUBLICATION brings together painting, text and objects made in comprehension of Knights’ work.

The publication explores the possibility of subjective biography as a form of critical enquiry and seeks to questions the stability and form of the established western art historical canon. I am actively exploring new approaches to understanding and comprehension in relation to the legacy of overlooked artists ( frequently women), developing a form that is analogous to ecriture feminine as practiced by Chris Kraus, Helene Cixous et al.
