Safe cycling environments play an important role in enabling a wider section of society to cycle. The importance of hard and soft environmental factors in influencing the decision to cycle varies across the population. When developing an inclusive environment for cycling it is essential that these variations are understood and considered in the infrastructure design process and that wider interventions are also implemented.The aim of this paper is to compare two potential quantitative methods which can be used to explore the impact of hard and soft environmental factors on cycling behaviour across social groups. Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and Importance-Satisfaction Analysis (ISA) are compared based on subjective criteria and metadata from survey records. This comparison is based around a preliminary analysis of exploratory focus groups and attitudinal questionnaires which were distributed to cyclists at two universities in Newcastle.
