With 50,000 ocean going ships, of which 700 ships with an average of 29 years, it was estimated that about 3000 ships will be recycled per year from 2010. With the Ship recycling industry drifting towards Asia and the phasing out of single hull tankers nearing, the timely removal of outdated tonnage is shouldered on Asia countries like India, Bangladesh, China and Pakistan. Although the steel is recycled, the toxic substance such as PCSs, metals, asbestos, lead, waste oil, etc. enter into the environment and into the bodies of the workers. Gearing up the workforce for Ship Recycling industry in Asia is not as simple as recommending training and usage of personal protective equipment. It is a long and meticulous process and tracks back to efforts from the local Government, Ship breaking industry, Shipping industry, relevant UN agencies and the international community.
