Notes: Data from a year-long study of American English learners of German illustrate that while surface representations indicate learners acquire the constraint on final obstruents in German, a task forcing learners to produce obstruents in the same stems in final/non-final positions revealed non-target underlying representations. Data also show transfer of flapping, and this might be responsibile for mis-establishing representations involving /t/ and /d/.
