This paper draws attention to co-housing community-led projects which are gaining popularity in a context of widespread crisis in mainstream housing markets in neo-liberal capital economies. The paper begins to develop a conceptual framework that recognises the significance of a ‘social architecture’ as counterpoint to the priority usually given to the material characteristics of home and neighbourhood design. A research agenda is developed to better understand the social phenomenon of group processes, shared visions and interpersonal capabilities – the ‘glue’ binding collaborative community relations. Discussion draws on the combined insights of feminist theory and progressive planning, alongside the views of cohousing residents from participatory research from the UK, the USA and Australia.
