Based on the heritage of the "artist record" (Kurt Schwitters Ursonate is one of the first), followed by paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures in an interior with furniture and wallpaintings, this research explores the possibilities to create a "Gesamtkunstwerk" in a group exhibition series. The two curators are artists themselves. By opening our ideas to the curatorial field, the decisions made were much more subjective in comparison to an art historians way of curating. As we had to merge the artists (inner) perspective with the curators perspective (outside) we had excess to the full possibilities which opened the doors to the Gesamtkunstwerk. A Gesamtkunstwerk is the attempt to create a total environment in which every part is a key to the whole. We brought together different artists, their works and ideas to Eastside Projects (Birmingham) and Kunstverein Schwerte (Germany) at nearly the same time, linking the two venues to one. We where defining all elements (light, furniture, sound, artefacts, walls…) within the group and discovered that the collective is the main key to achieve the Gesamtkunswerk. The exhibition showed, that the second key was our double function as artists and curators as we could switch perspectives and make all final decisions apart from the group, but serving the collective for the whole.

Notes: The ongoing exhibition series of Corridor Plateau has been conceived by Christian Freudenberger and Markus Karstiess. The vinyl, spinning on a turntable in each exhibition, is the basis of an experimental series of exhibitions dedicated to the collective and the Gesamtkunstwerk. The soundtrack with the music by Detlef Weinrich, the cover by Michael Bauer, the inner sleeve by Peyman Rahimi and the labels by Thomas Schütte, has been released by Apparent Extent, Cologne (2011). A magazine (A3 size) has been published by Kuntsverein Schwerte in 2011. Anneka French wrote a review in POV magazine issue 2, 2012. Supported by Sparda-Award NRW 2011, Kunststiftung NRW Germany, Arts Council England. Markus Karstiess and Christian Freudenberger received the Sparda Award in 2011 and have been shortlisted for the ADKV-Art Cologne Award in 2012. Corridor Plateau III will be shown in May 2013 at DREI, Cologne, Germany.
