The marine propulsion system known as the azimuthing pod drive has been around for more than a decade and recent years have seen their growing use on a widening variety of applications. The objective of this paper is to give the practicing naval architect general background into the technology and to highlight key issues applicable to the design of pod-driven ships. Influential disciplines on the design spiral are identified and discussed in the context of both preliminary and more general design issues.
