The exhibition will showcase the work of 'Anton Lesseman' (1899-1971) a confabulated artist whose work (sculpture, paintings, drawings etc.) I have made and whose biography and complete archive I have formed to present to the HMI Archive as one of the final outcomes of my research fellowship there in 2011. By introducing the work into the archive I am opening up the possibilty that future ‘scholars’ could use the ‘Lesseman’ figure as their own 'research tool' (i.e. using a fictional character to reinvestigate the lives of artists who might have fallen into the shadow of larger events of bigger names) Or, indeed, to flesh out the true pattern of 'Lesseman's'imaginary existence. My project seeks to investigate the possibilities for new tangents inherent in supposedly traditional mediums potentially allowing for new artistic forms and to new developments both within and issuing from established, even highly traditional modes of presentation.
