Abstract

A growing ageing population has become one of the greatest challenges in many countries in the 21st century. As people age, general health and fitness begins to deteriorate, which for drivers contributes towards increased involvement in accidents and increased likelihood of death or serious injury. However, in the UK it is seen as desirable to keep older drivers on the road for as long as possible. This paper examines the challenges facing older drivers to gain an insight into how ITS can be used to address these challenges in collaboration with design and policy solutions. Three stages have been undertaken in this research – focus groups with older drivers; interviews with key stakeholders; and a field study. The findings suggest that older drivers are facing specific age-related challenges and certain driving conditions are getting more stressful. However, in-vehicle ITS applications have the potential to provide support to stressful situations and support older drivers drive safely for longer.
