This paper describes a case study based on the experience of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), where pedestrian and cycling paths were built to link residential areas with major points of interest, in particular the two universities areas of Newcastle University and Northumbria University with the city centre, using marginal and abandoned areas close to main transport links and urban roads. Moreover, in the context of the development of a sustainable transport system, it was analysed a scenario, using a traffic macrosimulator model, which combines public transport with non-motorised modes, such as walking and cycling, making more accessible bus and metro stops, parking interchange, to enhance the use of different transport modes in chain shifts for a safer and shorter walking distance to be covered by users.
