The Newcastle Engineering Design Centre has developed a Modelling Framework Representation to support the modelling of complex engineering systems. The purpose of this framework is to allow a range of models, representing a wide variety of aspects relating to engineering systems, to be integrated. The objectives of doing this are to: obtain overall representation of such systems, allow system evaluation, identify emerging properties relevant to the design process, identify technical gaps in design, and reveal the potential for trade-off analyses and interdependency evaluations. This paper focuses on aircraft systems and begins by outlining the basic modelling processes used. A UML approach is utilised to construct a software tool which implements the Modelling Framework.
