Capturing context for heterogeneous corpus analysis: Some first steps

Abstract

This paper explores different ways in which we may relate measurements of different aspects of context gathered from multiple sensors (e.g. position, movement and time) to people’s use of language. It discusses some of the issues that arise from the design, representation and analysis of spoken corpora that contain additional measurements of different aspects of text and context. The paper argues that such descriptions may generate useful insights into the extent to which everyday language and communicative choices are determined by different spatial, temporal and social contexts. This in turn is related to the process of adoption of spoken corpus linguistic methodology by researchers based in disciplines located outside the traditional core areas concerned with language description.
