1. Short summary of the case study Nick Fox’s research explores romantic idealisation, personal histories and representations of desire, longing and loss through a delicate interweaving of both appropriated symbols and myths from the past as well as imagery drawn from contemporary culture. 'Myth and Moonlight is a project influenced by enduring narratives of longing and desire drawn from a hybrid of mythologies and time frames. Myth and Moonlight was enabled through a residency phase at the National Glass Centre, Sunderland (2009-2010)and was funded by Arts Council England and the National Glass Centre.(The residency also facilitate two other projects, Phantasieblume and the Longing Archive. The residency involves the examination of glassmaking processes and the possibilities of exploring my drawing and painting practice through glass. Funding for the research phase has come from NGC and the Arts Council England, A significant dimension to the impact of Myth and Moonlight has been through exhibition and through its influence on broadcast and print media, which has devoted a significant amount of space and attention to issues presented in his work. As a result of his residency, fox produced a significant amount of Glass works, was invited to produce a set of limited editioned works, which will be released to the public in 2011. 2.Underpinning research The underpinning research is Nick Fox’s ACE and NGC funded Research, development and production Residency at the National Glass centre, Sunderland from 2009-2010 which explored ideas of moonlight as spiritual panacea. Mythologies of romantic idealization, longing and coded articulations of desire specifically inform the research. Another area of interest for Fox is the exploration of contemporary and historical sub-cultural and floriographic languages, which influenced the direction of the decorative glass strands of this body of work, made with the assistance of the glass studio team. The Myth and Moonlight research project was developed as a series of individual and groupings of works containing a selection of glass objects, glass furniture, painted skins of paint, films and a live art work. The entire collection of works from this series have been presented in Fox’s recent two part solo presentation Phantsieblume Nachtlied at Ha Gamel Prestegart (Norway) which featured work from the Phantasieblume series in one site and the Myth and moonlight series in a second site. The exhibition featured a critical text by Matthew Hearn and a critical review fromthe Norwegian art critic Sigrun Hodne, additionally receiving a double page press coverage and radio coverage. The work “Echo” from this series will be exhibited in the forthcoming International Print Biennial, Newcastle in September 2011. The exhibition has been proposed to Grainne Sweeney for display at the National Glass Centre in 2012. (UK exhibition pending) This series of work will be contextualized through a publication with critical texts from relevant cultural commentators (pending, through a REF aiming high application) 3. (over 3 projects altogether) I intend to apply for a significant AHRC grant to develop the pilot of this project into national projects. I also Intend to apply for REF (aiming high) to complete the documentation of this project and transform it into a significantly highter REF-able outcome. 4. The contribution, impact or benefit As a visual Art practitioner, the impact and significance of Fox’s research is measured by peer review and audience figures of his exhibitions and projects. The Residency at NGC resulted in 1 Public Talk at the NGC,2 demonstrations at NGC Glass Studio, 1 website hosted by the NGC, 6 press interviews and a significant number of local and National print stories and radio articles and stories relating to my project and residency, including BBC North East, Metro Newspaper, The Journal newspaper and Culture Magazine and an article on Fox’s project in the Sunderland Echo. The resulting press reached a significant local and national audience for my project, of almost 1 million members of the public. The Myth and Moonlight series of works was exhibited in the context of Phantasieblume Nachtlied, my solo presentation at Ha Gamel Presegart, giving an international dimension to the project and included a critical review form the art critic Sigrun Holdne. Echo form this series will be shown in the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle as part of forthcoming International Print Biennial in September 2011 5.
