The significance of Mechthild of Magdeburg and the centre at Helfta for the development of a “mystical culture” has always been recognised. Over the last years, this has been complemented by a new interest in Northern Germany as an important centre not only for the Hanseatic trade in the late Middle Ages but also for the exchange of ideas across the language borders and territories. The ›Companion to Northern German Mysticism‹ aims to provide for the first time a comprehensive study of mystic thinking in Northern Germany and its influence on the late medieval devotional practice. This will link up the mystic thinkers of the 13th century with the spread of the ›Devotio moderna‹ in the 14th and 15th century. A special focus throughout the contributions will be on translation, transmission and reception to trace the mutual influence of south and north German writing in the multi-lingual networks of mystics like Mechthild, multiplicators like the Dominicans and their mixed audience in the late medieval convents and cities like the Lüneburg convents.
