On of the main drawbacks of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the significant increase in the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR), due to the large dynamic range of its symbol waveforms, which in turn requires a wide dynamic range of power amplification. To overcome this problem, a novel selected mapping (SLM) based technique named Orthogonal-SLM (OSLM) is proposed, where each candidate phase vector is perpendicular to any other vector. Moreover, the recovery of the desired phase vector is easily obtained without side information, and with the ability to reduce the computation of recovery. The performance of the proposed PAPR reduction methods was investigated for an OFDM system using 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provides a performance improvement both in terms of complimentary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of PAPR reduction and Bit Error Rate (BER) in the presence of a multipath fading channel. © 2010 IEEE.
