Abstract

This paper outlines a methodology for the application of discrete event simulation to the redesign of manufacturing systems within small manufacturing firms and illustrates the use of the methodology by applying it to carry out performance analysis and redesign of two manufacturing cells within small manufacturers. The cell redesigns were concerned with a combination of throughput capacity, lead times, stock levels, and batch sizes, and in both cases the simulation models were able to give valuable insights into the behaviour of the systems and the impact of proposed changes to the system. It is concluded that the application of discrete event manufacturing systems simulation within small manufacturers offers a knowledge-based and cost-effective method to redesign and improve the performance of manufacturing facilities, and that the methodology outlined for simulation projects within small manufacturers is effective.
