The effect of combined electro-osmosis and preloading was investigated to accelerate drainage and consolidation progress in soft subsoil clay with low permeability. Experiments of electro-osmotic consolidation under voltages ranged from 0 to 20 V and constant loading of 75 kPa were conducted, and the osmotic effluent was monitored from various London clay samples. The results show that the volume of osmotic effluent increases in the cathode and decreases in the anode with the total osmotic effluent increasing. The osmotic effluent from the anode is independent of voltage, and the coupling of loading and electro-osmosis increases the effluent from the clay, especially for high voltages.
