Mobile technology industries are making personal mobile devices more environment aware and adaptive to individuals needs. This paper presents the results of assessing the quality of image representations on mobile phones and the problems associated with the small screen displays. Psychophysics experiments are designed to investigate the visual performance of people when they are reading images on mobile phone screens. A WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) application system is developed enabling the visual search experiments to be carried out on a recent Nokia 6230i mobile phone. A large number of participants aged between 17 to 83 years old are involved in the experiments, of whose test results are divided into the normal age group and the old age group for a comparative study. The results show the difference in performance with visual search tasks between the older adults and the young adults. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.
