MARKING 10 YEARS OF THE JERWOOD DRAWING PRIZEA Survey Exhibition of Contemporary British Drawing Thursday 22 February - Friday 13 April 2007The gallery at Wimbledon College of Art is pleased to announce Drawing Breath, a selection of works to mark ten years of the annual open drawing exhibition: the Jerwood Drawing Prize. The exhibition opens at the National Art School Gallery, Sydney, Australia, from 22 February - 13 April 2007.The exhibition, originated by the gallery at Wimbledon College of Art, provides a rare opportunity to view a collection of drawings from a range of artists currently working in the UK. Co-curated by Professor Anita Taylor, Acting Head of College and Director of the Jerwood Drawing Prize and Paul Thomas, Artist and Co-founder of the Jerwood Drawing Prize. Drawing Breath reflects back on a decade of outstanding work, and represents a broad spectrum of contemporary drawing.'This exhibition aims not only to celebrate the quality, nature and values of current drawing practice, but to mark the ambition and aspirations of a wider audience. The competition has been running since 1994. Twelve years on and ten years after the open call for entries began, seems an appropriate moment to pause for reflection, draw breath and to look afresh at what has been achieved.' Professor Anita TaylorThe Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running open competition for drawing in the UK. It's aim is to promote and reward excellence and talent in contemporary drawing practice through the support and recognition of the work of all artists in the field of drawing. Firmly established at the heart of an art institution, the open drawing competition is a forum to test, evaluate and disseminate current drawing practice. The exhibition includes works by previous award-winners from 1994-2005, artist-selectors of the annual exhibitions from 1994-2006 and those who have continued to contribute to the notion of drawing within this competition. The invitation to exhibit in Drawing Breath is intended to provide a practice-led context to the annual decision-making and reflect the diversity and stature of the panelists. Originated at the gallery at Wimbledon College of Art, the exhibition will continue to tour returning to the UK in late 2007. The National Art School runs a unique educational program in which drawing is a core subject in all years. The National Art School has partnered with the College to present this anniversary exhibition. Both art institutions share synergies and emphasise drawing as a founding discipline in the study of visual arts.
