Abstract

The paper describes a preliminary numerical study of the dynamic behaviour of a real homogeneous earth dam using the 2D finite element code SWANDYNE II and adopting the Rouainia & Muir Wood model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of the involved clayey soils. The same earthquake record has been scaled to two different peak accelerations and applied at the bedrock level. The seismic response of the embankment is discussed in terms of modification of the input signal along the dam axis as well as earthquake induced permanent displacements and build-up of excess pore water pressures inside the structure. Finally, the performance of the numerical model is tested by changing the size of the time step employed in the dynamic simulations.
