There has been a recent growth of interest in object-ofiented parallel systems. This paper describes an investigation into the design of a specialist software Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) to support such systems. The vehicle for this investigation was the NIP parallel run-time system. NIP was designed to support implicitly parallel languages combing the object-oriented and functional approaches to programming. The NIPDSM is the object-based software DSM components of NIP. The paper shows that it is possible to design a set of optimisations to exploit the characteristics of object-oriented systems in order to deliver higher performance than could be achieved by a conventional DSM design which took no account of the object-oriented nature of the system. In the paper, the design and implementation of the NIPDSM are described, and performance results are presented.
