Meteor burst communications (MBC) is the earliest example of computing technology combined with radio equipment to engineer a new type of communication system. The radio channel used is a signal reflected from the ionized trails of meteors which allows reliable, cheap and secure data communication at ranges of up to 2000 km. The channel is intermittent in nature perhaps allowing transmission for only 1 percent of the time. Computers are the key to exploiting the random nature of the radio channel. This report surveys the role of computing technology and protocols in MBC systems. The characteristics of proposed data rate adaptive modem techniques are examined in detail. Necessary background information is introduced through a short review of the fascinating history behind MBC system developments. The report also embodies a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the literature on MBC systems; all references cited are available in the public domain.
