Computer networks in which each node is liable to break down from time to time and jobs are transferred between nodes during breakdowns, as well as during normal operation, are studied with regard to their capacity and utilisation. The problem of maximising the total profit from such a network is considered and optimal strategies are suggested in the case when the network is operating under heavy demand conditions. An approximate model is proposed for the case when demand is not heavy.
