This book explores the different ways in which Wales and Welshness have been represented in the National Museums Wales (www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/home/.ac.uk). Beginning with the proposal for the creation of a National Museum in the 1880s and ending with devolution and the present day, the study examines how museums have contributed to the construction, legitimation, and negotiation of public representations of national identities in Wales. In the process, this study demonstrates the important role that museums play in shaping a society's view of its past, its present, and its national identities. This research project has been made possible by the AHRC research leave scheme and supported by the University of Newcastle Arts and Humanities Fund.
