The phylogeny of holocarpic nematode parasites within the Oomycota was determined by comparing their small ribosomal (rRNA) genes, as well as their overall morphology and fine structure. The nematode parasites fell into 3 major clades. Haptoglossa belonged to the basal clade of the whole phylum. Depending upon the species included in the analysis a zoosporic Chlamydomyzium sp. was located basally to either of the main peronosporalean or saprolegnialian clades. The Myzocytiopsis and Lagenidium species clustered within a monophyletic clade corresponding with the Family Pythiales within the 'peronosporalean clade (galaxy)'.
