The manuscript Zentralbibliothek Zurich Ms C 58 is one of the most quoted and least known manuscripts of German literature. Newly found fragments allow a more precise localisation in the scholarly culture of the late 12th century. This is discussed with regard to a Latin-German mixed text, the 'Versus de despectu sapientis' that incorporte oral gnomic poetry in learned extracts from Horace and Ovid.
