Abstract

The definition of labour market areas provides a distinctive opportunity for academics to shape the boundaries used for government policies and the publication of statistics. The definitions depend upon the availability of data on commuting flows from national censuses, with the result that commuters crossing international boundaries are rarely included. Analysis of Belgian data illustrates the significance of cross-border flows in several parts of Europe. Current data collection policies make it impossible to monitor the growing integration of labour markets across national boundaries within the European Union.
