Notes: Consensus and Consent is one of six volumes in the series, Australia, the Common Culture which aims to narrate stories of cultural Australia. Consensus and Consent examines various socio-cultural and political issues of ‘manufacturing consent’ in Australia, both historical and contemporary. The volume explores two main interrelating themes. Firstly, the role of media in promoting consensus and/or manufacturing or engineering consent among the Australian population. This theme is developed throughout Parts 1 and 2 of the volume. The second theme is that of socio-cultural, and especially political, consensus- and consent-making at all levels of governance. This theme is developed in Part 1 with respect to the political Federation of Australia and generation of Australian support for the Boer War. It threads through Part 2 to form the basis for Part 3.
