Abstract

This project explored, developed and produced complex and intriguing relationships between fiction and contemporary art. The originality of this project lay in its progressive, compound structure, with writers from different backgrounds (fiction, poetry, academic) responding to an evolving touring exhibition made up of works that themselves had complex and diverse relationships to fiction. On completion, the project was the basis of a study day at Tate Britain in October 2005 that further explored the interplay and connections between these fields of activity. The exhibition tour was planned to maximize the impact of the interdisciplinarity of the project. At the Mead and Hatton Galleries, academics from diverse subject areas (Philosophy, English, Geography) gave introductions of the work to different groups, and the proximity to libraries at Huddersfield and the Hatton was optimized through offsite performances and film screenings and use of the website. This interdisciplinary project produced new forms of knowledge and productive collaborations in the field of Fine Art. Funded by the Arts Council of England, the AHRB, and the University of Newcastle and all participating venues, the project initiated 5 visual art commissions and 11 of new fiction. Work by 20 contemporary artists was shown alongside historic works from the collections of the Hatton and Huddersfield galleries. The exhibitions had an audience of 11,964 over a period of 163 days and were recommended in the Guardian Guide on several occasions. The book is distributed by Central Books and was previewed in Contemporary Magazine no.70.
