Notes: This work is one of the Secondary Strategy' whole school initiatives and was originally written whilst on leave of absence with the DfES. It is based on research on pedagogical strategies and their use developed over 10 years. I wrote a pilot handbook which was trialled in 4 LEAs. The national rollout version was completed after I had returned to the university in conjunction with a small team of writers. This handbook is located in every secondary school in England and being used in a substantial number. It not only provides guidance on planning and teaching but also incorporates a strong model of professional development based on collaborative planning, teaching, action reseach and review across subjects. The use of video recording of lessons is strongly encouraged. Finally suggestions are made as to how schools make 'scale up' their initial experiments.
