This paper describes a laboratory investigation into the effects of adding silica sand and/or cement on the behaviour of an artificial carbonate soil under shear. It demonstrates how both silica sand and cement reduce crushing of carbonate particles during shear. It also demonstrates how the addition of a combination of silica and cement produces the most effective improvement in terms of strength, stiffness and crushing.
